Research Design Incubator
PURPOSE
The purpose of the RDI is to provide guidance and assistance to the KL2 Scholars on research design, administration, data collection, data management and statistical analysis. The dedicated staff of the RDI are available to help foster collaboration and communication across and between disciplines, and to help the KL2 Scholars learn about different methodologies for data acquisition, data management and analysis. The RDI is headed by Professor J. Philip Miller and includes a data manager and research coordinator to assist the KL2 Scholars in data collection, management and analysis.
The RDI staff meets individually with KL2 Scholars as needed to supplement the resources available through the KL2 Scholars’ mentors. All KL2 Scholars are encouraged to utilize the RDI. Intensive interactions are anticipated at the initial design stages when a formal proposal is being constructed, during the early startup phase when the data collection and data entry resources are being implemented, and during the data cleaning and analysis phase at the end of the study. The RDI is meant to augment, rather than replace, the input that the Scholars receive from their mentors and will ensure a uniform high quality experience for all Scholars.
The resources of the RDI are focused on assisting and teaching KL2 Scholars how to access resources and become independent in performing all of the various components necessary to complete clinical research projects. For example, the RDI can assist scholars in:
- Research Design (refine study objectives, statistical aspects of design, sampling/randomization strategies)
- Research Administration (Human Studies / IRB applications, protocols, SAE reporting)
- Data Collection (developing/finding valid data collection forms, collection protocols, access to existing data archives)
- Data Management (database development, data entry, QC, data cleaning)
- Data Analysis (develop a valid data analysis plan, choose and apply appropriate statistical tests/models, use of statistical software, specialized data analysis)
